What Is Chondroitin?

Chondroitin sulfate is a complex carbohydrate which also occurs naturally in the body. Chondroitin molecules join with proteins to become proteoglycans. These proteoglycans comprise the ground substance in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue (cartilage, tendons, ligaments, etc.)

Chondroiton stimulates collagen production that helps cartilage to retain water and cushion the joints.

How can Chondroitin help me?

  • Chondroitin sulfate may help reduce joint pain and inflammation.
  • Chondroitin helps to keep cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid (particularly water) into the connective tissue.
  • Chondroitin may also block enzymes that break down cartilage.
  • Chondroitin provides the building blocks for the body to produce new cartilage.

Are there any precautions taking Chondroitin?

Chondroitin is well tolerated by most  patients.

In some instances the following side effects have been noticed

-          Rash

-          Mild headache

-          Nausea

-          Diarrhea

-          Gastrointestinal pain

Although allergic reactions are not common when taking chondroitin, if you experience symptoms such as a rash, hives, or shortness of breath, stop taking the chondroitin supplement and call your doctor.
